Hurting businesses will traumatize owners with attendant negative effects on nation's fragile economy #COVID19 has affected the world economy beyond imagination of which #Nigeria is no exemption. Why we haven’t called off strike –ASUU

Image
THE Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it has yet to call off its ongoing strike because it is waiting for the government to conduct an integrity test on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution. The UTAS is the payment platform created by ASUU in place of government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System. ASSU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi in an interview with The PUNCH said the government needed to give the clearance to National Information Technology Development Agency to conduct integrity test on UTAS. “The integrity test will be handled by NITDA, it is government that will facilitate it because NITDA is a government, agency and unless you get clearance from the government that test cannot be conducted.” While speaking on whether the government had accepted UTAS, Ogunyemi said, “We are still talking, we have given them the position of our members, we are thinking we should be able to hold a meeting this week if they have no

You will not get away with soldiers’ killing peaceful protesters, activists reply Buratai

Image
A leading member of the #EndSARS movement, Deji Adeyanju, said the COAS had escaped justice, insisting that he would not get away with soldiers’ killing of peaceful protesters at the Lekki tollgate. He admitted that his group had been leading the campaign for visa restrictions on Buratai and those who undermined democracy in the country. Adeyanju berated the Army chief over the killing of about 1,000 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria popularly known as Shi’ites and hundreds of Indigenous People of Biafra members. He stated, “We have been championing visa ban on him and others who continue to undermine democracy in the country and democratic tenets. How do you justify using bullets on unarmed protesters sitting down, holding the national flag and singing the national anthem? “This is a chief of army staff who said his loyalty is not to the country but to (President) Buhari. You can imagine the level of disservice this particular COAS has done to the country. “

I am not afraid of travel ban, I am ready to live the rest of my life in Nigeria – Buratai

Image
Speaking shortly before the meeting went into a closed-door session, Buratai dismissed calls on the international community to impose a travel ban on top military officers over alleged violation of human rights of #EndSARS protesters. He described as criminals those asking foreign governments to impose visa restrictions on him and the military commanders. He said, “Criminal elements are threatening us with travel ban but we are not worried because we must remain in this country to make it better. “The first time I travelled outside of this country, I was already 50 years and a general, so I don’t mind if I live the rest of my life here.” But #EndSARS protesters, human rights groups and lawyers, in separate interviews with The PUNCH berated Buratai for alleging that the protests were organised to discredit the Army. They also criticised his directive to the commanders that they should not be afraid of the ICC. -punch

Image
Soldiers involved in the killing and maiming of peaceful EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos, have now confirmed that they were actually drafted in for the mission on the request of the governor, contrary to the denial by the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu, that he knew nothing about the killing peaceful EndSARS protesters by personnel of the Nigerian Army. The soldiers had on Tuesday night opened fire on the protesters, killing and injuring many of them. The army personnel also prevented ambulances from accessing the scene to evacuate those injured to the hospital after opening fire on them. While presidential aide, Femi Adesina, said Obasanjo had commended Buhari for the national broadcast he delivered on the protests, Fani-Kayode claimed that the former president countered Buhari over his claim that the protesters resorted to violence. “Glad that OBJ told Buhari the bitter truth at their meeting after he claimed that the protests were turning violent. OBJ countered by telling him that the protests were peaceful until sponsored and violent thugs and hoodlums turned on the protesters and started attacking them,” said Fani-Kayode, who was special assistant on public affairs to Obasanjo from 2003 to 2

He was earlier said to be lodging in a hotel at the Charles de Gaulle area in France but the Nigerian residents were searching the particular hotel. The video which trended on the social media indicated that the residents eventually found the ‘hideout’ and sustained protest rhere, which was embarrassing to the management of the hotel, leading to the invitation of the police. Over 10 peaceful protesters were killed by soldiers in Tuesday’s massacre while demanding an end to police brutality and state repression. Lagos may ease curfew Friday – Sanwo-Olu

Image
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state to curtail the arson and widespread violence that has ravaged the state might be eased by Friday. The governor said the easing of the curfew was necessary for Lagos residents to restock food supplies and other essential commodities. “Once we see the streets are cleared up and all the agitation and high nerves have gone down, we might slow down the curfew by tomorrow (Friday) or next tomorrow (Saturday) at the latest,” he said on Thursday morning. Sanwo-Olu had announced the imposition of the curfew on Tuesday afternoon in the wake of the unrest in the state. Hoodlums had taken advantage of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality and extrajudicial killings to wreak havoc and cause mayhem in the state. The situation was further worsened when soldiers, in a bid to disperse the protesters at the Lekki toll gate, opened fire on the youths.

Amnesty International said at least 12 people were killed by the Nigerian army and police in two locations in Lagos on Tuesday in a deadly crackdown on demonstrations spurred by police brutality and deep-rooted social grievances. At least 56 people have died across the country since the protests began on October 8, with about 38 killed nationwide on Tuesday alone, according to Amnesty. Human Rights Watch also corroborated rep

Nigeria’s Stock Market Loses $297m on Wednesday, Losses Caused by #EndSARS Protests Estimated at $1.8bn

Image
Nigeria’s stock market lost N113 billion (about $297 million) on Wednesday as investors’ appetite, which has been high for days became dampened due to the tense security situation in the country. The market had remained stable since Monday with marginal gains following profit taking after weeks of a bull run. However, investors reduced their demand for equities yesterday as they reacted to the prevailing security situation after some #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos, were shot by soldiers on Tuesday. The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) All-Share Index declined by 0.75 per cent from 28.665.82 to 28,449.49, while market capitalisation shed N113 billion from N14.983 trillion to N14.870 trillion. Market operators said most investors were showing more concern about their safety first before thinking of investing. According to a stockbroker, most people are monitoring the environment and watching how the government will handle the situation, rather than invest. A

Aguero ends goal drought

Image
It is only 67 days since City's defeat against Lyon in the delayed quarter-finals of last year's competition, and that disappointment must be fresh in Guardiola's mind. His side made a sluggish start here too, but in the end he will have seen plenty to improve his mood - notably the end of Aguero's goal drought. The prolific Argentina striker had gone 230 days without scoring before converting his penalty, the longest spell of his illustrious career. Aguero had missed a large portion of that spell through injury, before making a return to action against Arsenal last weekend. His fitness and form is surely key to City success, especially with their only other senior striker Gabriel Jesus sidelined, and it must be reassuring for Guardiola to see him back among the goals.

#LEKKIMASSACRE: Waving flags, they sang Nigeria’s anthem. Then they were shot at

Image
In a statement on Wednesday, Amnesty International said it had confirmed that the Nigerian army and police killed at least 12 peaceful protesters in Lekki and Alausa, another protest ground in Lagos, after firing on thousands of peaceful demonstrators. Following a hospital visit to victims of what he described as the “unfortunate shooting incident” in Lekki, Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said one person had died from a blow to the head – but it was not clear if the person was a demonstrator. “It is imperative to explain that no governor controls the rules of engagement of the army,” said Sanwo-Olu, who cited what he described as the degeneration of protests “into a monster” when he announced the curfew. “I have nevertheless instructed an investigation into the ordered and the adopted rules of engagement employed by the men of the Nigerian army deployed to the Lekki Toll Gate,” he added. The Nigerian army, however, denied the involvement of their men in the sh

Shoprite branch looted by hoodlums in Lagos

Obaseki gave the directive while inspecting the vandalized correctional centres and other government institutions in the state in collaboration with the police and Corrections Service officers. “We condemn the act. Even the #End SARS protesters will join us in condemning this dastardly act. The government would not sit down and watch hoodlums operating in such a manner,”. He said, “The attacks on the security facilities were orchestrated by criminally minded people. “We have given the inmates between now and Friday to report to the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police, Benin for proper documentation.” He explained that those who voluntarily return back to the correctional centres would be freed from any punishment. “Those who failed and are rearrested will be made to bear the full wrath of the laws. “We are using this opportunity to appeal to all inmates in our Correctional Centres who have escaped to come back on their own before the close of business on Friday thi
