Latest Sports Updates

 1) Tottenham are desperate to bring in new signings before the 2020 summer transfer window closes as Jose Mourinho looks to hit back at his doubters.

Spurs and Mourinho were widely criticised last week after the north Londoners lost their first match of the new Premier League season.

But the north Londoners responded by making a string signings, with the club confirming the double signing of Gareth Bale and Spanish full-back Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid on Saturday.

The Welshman has completed his stunning return to White Hart Lane, following the earlier deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty.

But while on-pitch performances have improved – Spurs thrashed Southampton 5-2 on Sunday – fans are eager for more star names to come in, with Mourinho still searching for a striker as he wants back-up and competition for Harry Kane.

2) Manchester United and Tottenham are battling it out to sign Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth, reports claim.

According to Turkish outlet Asist Analiz, the two Premier League clubs are keen to sign the 24-year-old, who scored a staggering 33 goals while on loan at Trabzonspor last season.

Sorloth was due to complete a move to RB Leipzig today but the report suggests his medical was cancelled at the last minute.

Jose Mourinho has made it no secret that he is in the market for a new striker to provide back-up to Harry Kane.

However, negotiations to sign Sortloth will be complicated as his loan at Trabzonspor does not expire until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

3) Tottenham striker Harry Kane looks set to be involved in an emotional return to Leyton Orient in Tuesday's Carabao Cup game.

The England captain scored his first professional goal while on loan at Brisbane Road from Spurs in 2011 and the relationship has lasted, with Kane sponsoring Orient's three kits this season.

Despite playing 84 minutes at Southampton on Sunday, where he scored and created four goals for Son Heung-min, and having another game on Thursday in Europa League qualifying, boss Jose Mourinho has suggested that Kane will play against the League Two team.

“Harry in principle he has to be (involved), we need specially in these matches against these teams, in theory, inferior and, in theory, teams that are going to defend against you, you need a striker,” Mourinho said.

“I want Harry to play, let's see if he can, if he feels ready to move.

“He's an experienced player, he knows his body better than any sports science guy or any medical guy. If he is ready to play, of course he will.”

4) Darren Bent believes Dele Alli will become a better footballer playing alongside Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Marco Verratti at Paris Saint-Germain.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to the Ligue 1 champions after falling out of favour under Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

Bent told talkSPORT: “It would be superb for him. We know the French league is not as competitive as the Premier League.

“But when you go and play with players like Mbappe, Neymar, Verratti, it’s automatically going to lift his levels and make him a better player.

“A change of scenery could do him the world of good and going to that club, he’d be fantastic there.”

5) Tottenham’s Carabao Cup clash against Leyton Orient has been thrown into doubt after the League Two club announced numerous players have tested positive for coronavirus.

Spurs were set to travel to Leyton Orient for their Carabao Cup third round clash on Tuesday.

Leyton Orient were due to host Tottenham in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday

However, the O’s positive coronavirus tests could see the match postponed.

A Leyton Orient statement read: “Following our game on Saturday, September 19, COVID-19 testing was conducted on all of our first team playing squad.

“Today we received formal confirmation which shows that a number of our first-team squad have tested positive for COVID-19.

“We have informed the EFL and Tottenham Hotspur and will make a further announcement regarding Tuesday’s match shortly.

“We have also informed Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle and Oldham Athletic, our three most recent opponents, prior to the public release of this information.

“Leyton Orient’s priority is the health and well-being of its players and staff. Those who have tested positive will now strictly follow government self-isolation guidelines.

“The Breyer Group Stadium and training ground facilities will be closed until further notice.

“At this time, the club will make no further comment.”

6) Jose Mourinho has admitted he does not know when Gareth Bale will make his second Tottenham debut.

Spurs re-signed the 31-year-old on loan from Real Madrid – seven years after selling him to the LaLiga giants for a then world record £85million fee.

A front three of Heung-min Son, Harry Kane and Bale looks set to be a terrifying sight for Premier League defenders.

Asked when Bale will play, Mourinho said: “I don't know when Gareth can be back. The only thing I know is that his motivation is high.

“He's so happy to be with the club of his heart, he's so happy to play for us.”

7) Tottenham will auction their signed match shirts from Tuesday's Carabao Cup game with Leyton Orient, with proceeds being donated to the JE3 Foundation, set up in the memory of Justin Edinburgh.

Edinburgh died last June from a heart attack aged only 49, a month after managing Orient back into the Football League.

He played 276 times for Spurs between 1990 and 2000 and won the FA Cup and League Cup, so Tuesday's third-round encounter promises to be an emotional night.

The JE3 Foundation was set up by Edinburgh's son Charlie aiming to support heart charities and to campaign for legislative change – Justin's Law – to make it compulsory for all health, fitness and sports facilities to be equipped with a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD).

Charlie Edinburgh said: “This is another first-class touch from a wonderful football club.

“The support we have received and continue to receive from Tottenham Hotspur fills us with pride as a family at just how much Dad meant to the club and its supporters.

“The funds raised from the shirt auction will go a long way to assisting the JE3 foundation in raising awareness around CPR and use of defibrillators, contributing towards our campaigning for 'Justin's Law'.

“The JE3 Foundation and the Edinburgh family once again sincerely thank all those who continue to support us.”

8) Life without Gareth Bale has not started well for Real Madrid…

Zinedine Zidane's side were held to a goalless draw in their LaLiga opener against Real Sociedad on Sunday – just one day after loaning Bale to Tottenham.

Forwards Karim Benzema, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior all drew blanks as Los Blancos' title defence began with a whimper.

Zidane said: “In general, we did well. The only thing missing was the goal and a bit of a killer instinct up top, particularly when the chances came our way.

“Ultimately we struggled to create chances, particularly in the second half. In the first half, we had three opportunities but lacked that killer instinct.”

9) Darren Bent has questioned Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Dele Alli.

The Tottenham midfielder has been left out of the last two matchday squads in victories over Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Southampton.

It has led to reports linking Alli with a shock move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Bent, who played for Tottenham between 2007 and 2009, dubbed Alli’s squad omissions ‘farcical’.

10) Jose Mourinho has confirmed Dele Alli will play on Tuesday away to Leyton Orient after being left out the Tottenham squad to face Southampton.

However, the Portuguese boss admitted he had ‘too many players’ as the England international continues to be linked with a move away from north London – with PSG said to have opened talks to acquire him.

Questions about Dele’s future are unlikely to have damped Mourinho’s mood too much after watching Spurs struggle initially, before blowing Southampton away 5-2.

Yet Mourinho insists the 24-year-old must show ‘how good he is’ when he gets his chance against Orient in the Carabao Cup.

“At this moment, we have too many players in the squad,” the Portuguese told talkSPORT.

“I had on the bench; Bergwijn, Lo Celso, Sissoko, Lamela… to have Dele, I need to leave somebody else behind.

“And that’s the situation at this moment. He will play Tuesday, he needs to show how good he is.”

Jose Mourinho confirms Dele Alli WILL play against Leyton Orient – but could it be his last game before PSG move?
