Manchester United beat Brighton for the second time in four days.

Image
Manchester United beat Brighton for the second time in four days, with Paul Pogba scoring a free-kick to help seal their progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. On Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side needed a dramatic late penalty, awarded via VAR after the full-time whistle had blown, to beat the Seagulls 3-2 in a game packed with incident. This was a less frantic and fun affair, played out by largely second-string sides and in periods of torrential rain. And it was settled in far more routine fashion, with midfielder Scott McTominay finding space in the box to head home Juan Mata's free-kick from close range in the first half. Having sent on both Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Mata then sealed the result with a cool finish from inside the box after he was found by a neat flick from Donny van de Beek. Pogba added the garnish with a direct set-piece that found the top corner via a deflection. It was an otherwise even game for large periods, with chances for both side

Sterling double helps holders Man City into Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Image
Raheem Sterling's first two Manchester City goals of the season - and Ferran Torres' first for the club - ensured the holders reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Burnley's expense. City dominated the game and Burnley keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell had to twice smartly deny Sterling before the England forward got the breakthrough after Benjamin Mendy's cross. His second was a close-range finish from Torres' cross before the Spain winger, who joined from Valencia for £20.78m in August, put the tie beyond Burnley's reach with an instinctive finish to cap a fine individual display. Burnley struggled to create chances and it required a fine block by Peacock-Farrell to deny Sterling, who has scored 33 goals for City since the start of last season, his hat-trick. It was the perfect response by Pep Guardiola's side after their 5-2 home drubbing by Leicester City last Sunday. The draw for the quarter-finals takes place after Liverpool's tie against

Alexis Sanchez set up Lautaro Martinez for Inter's fifth before Caprari got another consolation goal. Victory means Inter have won two games out of two so far in Serie A, with both being high-scoring encounters. Antonio Conte's side won their season opener 4-3 against Fiorentina.,

Pope rejects US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meeting.

Image
The Vatican has denied US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo an audience with Pope Francis. The Holy See said the Pontiff does not receive politicians during an election period. The move adds to a diplomatic row following comments by Mr Pompeo about China and the Catholic Church. The Vatican accused Mr Pompeo of trying to use that issue to attract voters in November's US presidential election. In an article earlier this month, Mr Pompeo said the Catholic Church was risking its "moral authority" by renewing an agreement with China regarding the appointment of bishops. Donald Trump receives support from conservative religious movements, including conservative Catholic voters, some of whom think Pope Francis is too liberal. Human rights groups say many Catholics in China are persecuted and driven underground for pledging allegiance to the Pope instead of an official Chinese Catholic association. Despite this, in 2018 the Vatican made a deal with China to have some say over the

Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict: Azerbaijan president vows to fight on.

Image
Azerbaijan's president has vowed to fight on until Armenian forces leave disputed territory, on the fourth day of fierce fighting in the region. "We only have one condition: Armenian armed forces must unconditionally, fully, and immediately leave our lands," President Ilham Aliyev said. More than 100 deaths have been reported in the heaviest fighting in years over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Officially part of Azerbaijan, it is governed by ethnic Armenians. The two former Soviet republics fought a war in 1988-1994 over the territory. Although Armenia backs the self-declared republic it has never officially recognised it. It is unclear what caused the renewed fighting, which is the heaviest since the 1994 ceasefire, and there are growing fears international powers could be dragged into the conflict. On Wednesday French President Emmanuel Macron said he was "extremely concerned by the warlike messages" coming from Turkey, a staunch ally of Azerbaijan. Turkey sa

However, the player is keen on leaving Stamford Bridge due to his lack of game time and it appears he has now played his last game for the club. After the defeat to Spurs on penalties in the Carabao Cup, Lampard was asked whether he had any comment to make on Rudiger’s absence from the matchday squad but the Chelsea boss gave nothing away: “No. It’s not at that point.” Some reports suggest that the 27-year-old has been offered, along with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, to West Ham in the Blues’ attempts to sign Declan Rice. Tottenham, themselves are also said to be interested in the centre-back, while there have also been rumours of interest from Paris Saint-Germain over the past week.

Federal Government Colleges get nod to reopen + Resumption date, schedule

Image
Federal Government Colleges have been given the nod to reopen. This followed the further easing of the lockdown imposed on the country following the spread of the Coronavirus Disease to the country. Schools were ordered shut by the Federal Government in March in the bid to curtail the spread of the virus. When the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 okayed the reopening of schools by states, it said those under its control will remain closed. The PTF, headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the government was not comfortable enough to allow schools to reopen, warning state governments to ensure maximum compliance in order not to allow the spread of the pandemic among students. However, information available to The Eagle Online on Thursday has it that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has told Heads of the various Federal Government-owned schools that they could reopen. The constable said: “I’d never seen anything like this before, so I wasn’t sure.” Four police officers then went to the basement apartment where Strong allegedly confessed: “OK, you got me, the gig’s up. “If you want to recover the rest of her, it’s in my freezer”.
